Ka'i Research Collective

Yes - there is an island where that pin drop is (Saipan). And yes, that's where I'm from. I come from Hawaiian, Jamaican, Sri Lankan, and Russian roots (that's just a small sampling of what I've got coursing through my veins), with a passion for the ocean, the trails, and the music of life.

During the past decade, I've worked as a both a marine resource manager and researcher. These two experiences have helped shape my vision for what actionable, interdisciplinary marine science can and, importantly, should be.  Currently, I'm a Postdoctoral Research Scholar with the Donovan Lab in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning and the Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science. My science focuses on using social, environmental, and climate data to develop equitable and cooperative solutions for coastal communities. I'm inspired by his upbringing in Micronesia and my kuleana (responsibility) as a kanaka maoli (Native Hawaiian) to care for the planet for the generations yet to come.

Aloha ‘āina: love the land

“Aloha ‘āina is a relationship not just with the land but really with nature itself and in particular that part of the land and sea and streams and water that actually sustains life. ‘Āi is the word that means to eat and when we say ‘āina we’re talking basically about what it is that feeds not just humans but basically everything, and everything is directly dependent and interdependent with the ‘āina.” - Jon Osorio

I encourage you to establish a relationship with the lands, waters, and people of all the places you live, work, and play.
